How do I look up IDACI / WIMD / SIMD Deciles for my students?

IDACI/WIMD/SIMD deciles 1-4 are one of our student targeting criteria and so we request that schools share the IDACI decile of students on our registration form on the Hub. 

How do I look up IDACI Deciles? - England

Students in England meet our postcode deprivation criteria if their home postcode falls into IDACI deciles 1-4. You can follow the below steps to look up IDACI deciles for your students and generate a downloadable excel report: 

  1. Go to: http://imd-by-postcode.opendatacommunities.org/
  2. Enter the postcode(s) into the "Postcode Lookup" tool on the website:
  • You can copy and paste in a list of all students’ postcodes to the box then they will all appear on the excel report.
  • You can also choose to upload an existing excel list with the postcodes only on separate lines. 
  • If you look them up one by one, they will need to be downloaded separately. 
  1. Click "Get Deprivation Data"

  1. Download "your custom deprivation data" (either .xlsx or .csv)

  1. Open the downloaded spreadsheet and go to the column "IDACI Decile" (usually Column X) to find out the decile for the postcodes to use when registering students.
  2. On rare occasions, a postcode does not have an IDACI decile, this will come up as "unmatched" – you can enter these ones only as unmatched on the Hub when registering students. 

How do I look up IDACI Deciles? - Northern Ireland

Students meet our postcode deprivation criteria if their home postcode falls into IDACI deciles 1-4. You can follow the below steps to look up IDACI deciles for your students and generate a downloadable excel report:

  1. Go to: https://deprivation.nisra.gov.uk
  2. Enter the postcode into the "Postcode Lookup" tool on the website
  3. Scroll towards the bottom to look up the "Income Affecting Children Deprivation Domain - rank"
  4. Use the table below to translate the rank into a decile

Students meet our postcode deprivation criteria if their home postcode falls into WIMD deciles 1-4. You can follow the below steps to look up WIMD deciles for your students and generate a downloadable excel report:

  1. Download the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation spreadsheet here: https://statswales.gov.wales/Download/File?fileId=637
  2. Enter your students’ postcodes on the ‘Postcode_to_LSOA_to_WIMD_rank’ tab.

  1. You need the number from the ‘WIMD 2019 Decile’ column (usually Column F) to find out the decile for the postcodes to use when registering students.
  2. On rare occasions, a postcode does not have an WIMD decile, this will come up as "unmatched" – you can enter these ones only as unmatched on the Hub when registering students.

How do I look up SIMD Deciles? - Scotland

Students meet our postcode deprivation criteria if their home postcode falls into SIMD deciles 1-4. You can follow the below steps to look up SIMD deciles for your students and generate a downloadable excel report:

  1. Download the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation spreadsheet: available here
  2. Enter your students’ postcodes on the ‘SIMD 2020v2 postcode lookup’ tab.

  1. You need the number from the ‘SIMD 2020v2 Decile’ column (usually Column E) to find out the decile for the postcodes to use when registering students.
  2. On rare occasions, a postcode does not have an SIMD decile, this will come up as "unmatched" – you can enter these ones only as unmatched on the Hub when registering students.
